I tell my patients that they should avoid drugs cleared by the liver. That is only about 2% of all drugs, but includes ALL narcotic pain pills (examples: lortab, morphine, percocet, hydrocodone, codeine, darvocet, etc). This also includes benzodiazepines such as xanax, librium, most prescription sleeping pills. Safe medications include NSAIDS such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, etc. because these are cleared by the kidney. The problem is that greater than 90% of patients with HCV have a drug abuse history (inhaled cocaine, IV drugs, etc) and thus have a propensity for addictive substances, such as narcotics, benzodiazepines, etc. Thus it is VERY COMMON for HCV patients to request the very drugs they should not take and I am quick to restrict them for their own safety

it depends on the person really. some doctors use either tylenol or ibuprofen, however, for reasons due to the particular persons health issue and the extent of liver disease, it is up to the doctor what he or she deems safe for that patient.

Ibuprofen...I take Advil
