For brute force its the .500S&W. However at longer distances the .460 S&W has an edge with its better ballistic coeficiant.

The .500 Linebaugh is also right up there.

The .50 A&E is probably the winner in the auto pistols but it doesn't compare with the other three calibers. And these days the .44 Magnum is considered middle of the road where power is concerend.

The Ruger .480 and the .454 Casull along with al the other calibers I mentioned are all more powerful than the .44 Mag is these days. And there are other but they are custom propisitions.

The most powerful handgun in the world is not mass produced.A man on the internet made a Thompson contender that was chambered for the .620 Nitro Express(900 grain bullet). This is no myth if you look around long enough you can find the video of him letting a man shoot it.Also look up Zeleska 600 nitro revolver.

There's so many single-shot pistols out there chambered for exotic and/or rifle ammunition that I won't make an attempt at that. I would not be at all surprised if the most powerful handgun is one of these.

The most powerful REPEATING handgun I know of is the Pfeifer Zeliska revolver, chambered in .600 Nitro Express.

well as far as titles go the .44 magnum holds that name, but in reality there are many many handguns that blow the .44 magnum out of the water, the smith and wesson 460, or the .500 smith or the .454 cassull just to name a few. the desert eagle doesnt even come close to any of these rounds. and again there are so many single shots chambered for rifle rounds or even shotgun rounds, ive seen photos of an 8 gauge shotgun pistol, if i had to choose then i would pick that 8 gauge, but i would want to fire it.

The most powerful production gun is the S&W 500. But on one of the forums i visit, a guy showed a picture he found of a revolver made by a German custom gun maker. It was a five shot revolver chambered in 600 Nitro Express. The second largest smokless powder cartridge ever developed by Holland & Holland of London. This cartridge was spacificly developed for Dangerous game like Elephant and Cape buffalo.

Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) would say it's the .44 Magnum, "the most powerful handgun in the world, and could blow your head *clean* off," but today, it's probably the Desert Eagle (up to .50 cal.).
