My dog is 1 yr old and when I bought him he had all his shots up to date etc. Lately he's been dragging his butt on the carpet...signs of infection? -- He urines constantly too, I heard this can be a sign of urinary tract infection? -- Also, someone told me he breathes heavily..even if he hasnt been running..(like panting) just laying there.... could this be a sign of worms?

When dogs drag their behinds on the floor, that is usually a sign that their anal glands are impacted. (sometimes you will notice a skunk like odor from their behind..but not always).

You need to take the dog to the vet to have the anal glands expressed.

Some dogs never need this, some need it often. Only one of mine needs it done. I just have the vet do it every year at her check up.

It doesn't take long..and is inexpensive.

Dragging the butt on the floor thing is usually an indicator of worms not infection (unless there is a lot of swelling or discharge). He probably needs a good worming. Males also urinate more often than females and also like to scent their territory ...that could be what he is up to there. The breathing thing can be a million different reasons or no reason. Unless YOU really see this all the time and his breathing looks "labored" then you should have him checked out by your vet.

It would be the anal glands that are causing his problems. Since you have a small dog just put him in the tub with some warm water and wet his bum then squeeze the anal sacs (you will know it worked when it squirts out) it doesn't smell too pretty so be prepared for that. It is pretty easy to do. If you don't want to squeeze them yourself, you will have to take him to a groomer and have them do it.

For the other problems take him to a vet, they will know better ways to treat everything else.

I don't have a dog, but a friend of mine has a dog that will perform this trick from time-to-time on her carpet.

Really an odd looking thing to see while we were eating dinner.

It is that anal cleansing thing that requires attention. I sincerely hope that someone warned you about this little treat you will look forward to in caring for your beloved pet.

I decided not to get a dog.

Rubbing his butt on the floor can usually be one of two things..........tapeworms (look for things that look like sesame seeds or grains of rice around his anus or on his poop), or impacted anal glands.
Either can be dealt with QUITE CHEAPLY at the vet. I could tell you how to deal with the anal gland issue at home, but, trust me, you'd rather pay someone else to do it, it's not pleasant smelling. Good luck.

It could be. But I am not trying to sound stupid.. But I know that since dogs can't wipe, sometimes it get's itchy, and thats why they might drag their butt on the carpet. That's what my dog used to do...and we used to call it Buttscutching (I don't know why...or where it came from...) But you shoudl take him to the vet to see if he has worms. Check his droppings for worms, or eggs, and you may even want to look at his bum to see if you see any eggs. Also, you can try to stick a piece of tape around his anus, and if he has any worms they may stick to it. Well, good luck!

You have to squeeze their anal glands, if he's dragging it on the floor, it means that the glands are full and didn't get expelled when he went to poop. Take him to the groomers to get them empty. For all his other problems, take him to a vet for a comprehensive physical exam.
