just a custom. Many Christians do something similar, ever hear the phrase "may she/he rest in peace"?

All human souls continue to exist in the spiritual world and they always need to attain peace in the love of the One True God.
Attainment of peace here depends on the wise choice of the obedient soul, but peace in the next world fully depends on the mercy of God.

I think, dont take my word for it, but im pretty sure they mean let him have eternal rest and not come back for revenge or something when they say peace be upon him. I dont believe in people coming back from the dead though. People either go to heaven :) or hell

God had said the sinner shall have no peace, the only hope for peace that any muslims has is death. Yeat there quran provides no promise of anything after death. There God does not promise a single thing. I guess he can't deliver.

its a symbolic sentence in which we want to wish the dead person to be in heaven because there'll be no peace in hell, now we dont say it to anybody who is alive because it will not be a good thing to say to a living being to go to heaven, ie. unintentionaly we are saying that he may die and go to heaven. This is the only reason....
So I cant say,,,,May peace be upon you.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: Not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. -John 14:27.
Seems to me that Jesus doesn't need too much peace upon him, seeing as he's giving.

i would wish peace to Muhammad (pbuh) if he was alive also. it doesn't seem right to speak his name without saying it with respect. i cant even type his name without adding peace be upon him to it

I'm sure it's just a custom out of respect.
I'm Christian, and out of respect for the dead, I find myself saying, "God rest his/her soul". I don't know why, it's just custom...course it could be that I'm from the south too. Might be a cultural thing.
