-but seriously, just tell them and remind them that true parents respect the decisions of their children even if they do not agree with them.

Do you know, with certainty, that God does not exist? I don't think that you're really atheistic; I think you are simply rebelling against something for the sake of rebellion. Rebellion can be OK - turn it into skepticism. Start taking apart what you've been taught and analyzing it to see if it is true or not. Some things you may find may be true, and some things may not hold water when you really examine the teaching. The Bible says we are to question... pretty much everything, I think. I think it may have been Paul who said that - I forgot. Maybe you should go find out if I am wrong. :o) There is NOTHING wrong with testing things to make sure they're logical. I think that you have a brain, and haven't been given a real chance to use it in terms of Christianity. You've been talked at a lot, and no real discussion takes place. Maybe you might be interested in "The Evidence Bible". I would want to sleep in on Sunday too, if the sermon was completely one sided and didn't speak to you. Maybe you might even need a new church. If you would like to talk about any of this more, please e-mail me. Just click on my profile.

Try talking to them about evolution and say it says the bible is wrong, then tell them that your school is teaching it so that it must be true. Then they will probably say that its the devil or that there lieing. And you should ask how do you know that the bible is not lieing, and say that is the same thing muslims and jewish people about there religion so who's right. Say evolutionis the most logic chocie and that is why you don't want to go to church.

Start with, I'm not gay. That should ease the blow. Seriously, just tell them. Don't say, "I think the Bible and religion is a big steamy pile of horse $hit," but easily, just say you have given it a lot of thought and you really don't feel it is right for you. Explain it nicely.

df a,
I don't know how old you are (perhaps a teenager). I remember discovering how 'unlogical' religion is. If your parents are very religious, they probably 'suspect' that you're not into it. They won't be happy about it, but if it's not for you, then you might just tell them that 'church' isn't working for you and you're exploring other avenues in life. They will be disappointed but should understand. That's about as diplomatic a way as I can think of.

ah, we are talking about the catholic church , are we?
I was raised in the catholic church also.
as soon as I was old enough to know better, I decided to seek God on my own and God found me.
I strongly suggest that you follow the same path.
I never told my family.
I just did it.
here is the MOST important thing I found out after I left the catholic church:
John 3: The Words of Jesus Christ (God in the flesh)
3. "Verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God."
4. Nicodemus saith unto Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?"
5. Jesus answered, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God."
6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18. He that believeth on Him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

The sooner the better. I held it in for a long time and finally completely blew my stack and shocked my whole family. It wasn't fair to them. Just be calm and tell them the truth. What are they going to do, murder you? If not, you'll be ok. You have one life to live. Don't spend it living up to someone else's definition of what constitutes a good life.

I'm still trying to find out a way to talk to my Mom and Dad about the same thing. I am sure they know some of what I believe and know but one day I will.

I still haven't told my parents yet. I've told siblings and some cousins. Friends of course but I'm not sure how to approach my parents or even if I want to.

I just told mine that I didn't want to go to church any more and they left it drop. The subject never came up again. Don't know if that will work for you or not.

Well, maybe in a more gentle tone just tell them that you were never able to be a believer. That maybe you tried, but it's just not who you are...and you hope they can still accept you for what you are.
