I need to file federal and state taxes for Ohio and New York. I'm taking the standard deduction, so should I even bother with software at all?

do it for free (probably) online with H&R block, TurboTax, etc.

rather than buying software, take everything to a tax preparer and let them fill everything out. the expense is deductible on the next year's taxes. that is, if he does the 2006 taxes, you get a deduction for the 2007 tax year. the preparer is then going to have to justify the filing in the event you are audited, which is not likely, but possible, if you have some odd deductions such as excessive business milage.
