Let's not confuse your W-2 (reporting of wages and witholding) report (it's not a tax return) and your W-4 (amount of witholding from your wages) request.

For 2006, your withholding is set, and what has been withheld from your paychecks, as reflected in your W-2, needs to be reported on your Form 1040 for 2006.

Your 2007 withholding can still be adjusted by submitting a W-4 to your employer's payroll dept. You need to file a W-4 for federal separate from your state's W-4.

There is no MFJ on the W-4. That is only relevant to your filing status on your 1040. Declaring "married by withhold at the higher single rate" (which is what you've done) on your federal W-4 only means your employer withheld more that you would've if you declared married. No big deal at tax time since you'll end up w/ a bigger refund, depending on other factors. But you're smart in wanting to make sure you don't withhold more than necessary.

You cannot change 2006 W-2's. However, you can go to personnel and change the number that you claim for 2007. Even if you do not change anything, this is a situation that will result in a higher refund of tax next year. If you feel that you need that money in your weekly paycheck, then change your W-2.

Your question is heavily complicated. form W-2 does no longer instruct exemptions, that is a salary and Tax truth that shows what you earned and how a lot tax develop into withheld. You instruct exemptions on your tax go back once you report it. if you're unmarried without dependents and may't be claimed as a depending, you get one personal exemption and that is it. perhaps you're asking about withholding allowances on form W-4? if you're unmarried, no longer a depending, and performance in common words one activity you may declare 2 and could only about destroy even at filing time. If the different situations prepare, only examine the learning printed properly on the variety as you finished it. large refunds are not to any extent further some thing better than an interest loose loan to the authorities so that is on your ideal interest to do it properly.

you cant change your 2006 w-2, you just fill out your taxes for 2006 as married filing jointly if that is what you are supposed to be claiming.
