No, but it needs to be a UHF / HDTV antenna that looks like this ~

It depends how good the TV signals are where you live, and also on how good your TV tuner is. If you're a long way from the transmitter, you may need a big antenna as high in the air as possible, and a rotator to point it at the transmitter. Try it with a set of "rabbit ears" and see what you can pick up.

Or, you can also get HDTV through a satellite TV provider, but then you need their HD tuner box, and the service isn't free.

There is no such thing as an HDTV or digital antenna. Any antenna that will pick up VHF and UHF signals at your location will work. See

your best bet is just getting a hd box and channels from your cable provider. i tried the antenna, it was terrible. i payed 1800 for my tv so an extra 15 a month for hd is fine. i love it
