The netherworld? Do you mean the afterlife?

I don't know about that (personally I believe in reincarnation), but the Otherworlds have a rich and varied mythology attatched to them - have a read of some of the old Celtic myths. Whether you believe them or not, they're good stories!

It is the additional dimensions that mathematicians speak of. What they don't want to admit is that real places do exist, yet are inaccessible to us. The Lake of Fire is one. Another is the Abode of the Dead, which residents are awaiting being tossed into the Lake of Fire (where one dimension is folded into another, exactly like in some sci-fi novels). Another is heaven. Apparently, we will be able to shift between these dimensions and those, much as Jesus did after his resurrection (the whole walking thru locked doors thing.)
