I'm a Christian in the Southern U.S. so there aren't a lot of Jewish people around for me to ask this. (And please don't think I'm trying to belittle your religion...I'm just curious.) I've read all the laws that God handed down to the people of Israel about sin and cleanliness and sacrifice. I know what they used then: sheep, birds, etc. But today, I'm pretty sure the average Jew doesn't have a sheep pen in his backyard. So what is used now for atonement?

We don't have animal sacrifices anymore because our Temple was destroyed in 70 C.E. and the mosque sits there now.

Now for atonement, we do different things. For sins committed against G-d, we have Yom Kippur, which is a day of prayer, fasting, and repentance. For sins committed against people, we have teshuvah, which basically involves asking forgiveness of that person (you actually have to go up to that person and ask to be forgiven), righting the wrong, and promising and making a conscious, willful effort to never commit the wrong again.

Animal sacrifices left the scene around the 10th century AD for the Jewish people. Today, the closest thing we do to a sacrifice is maybe eat lamb for the Passover meal...but it isn't sacrificed on any altar, or presented to G-d, or anything like that. d:)

I get the impression the most of them interpret Hosea 6:6 to mean that sacrifice is not needed if one does good works instead.

Some orthodox Jews continue to kill sheep even today, I was told, but I haven't seen it.

oh wow, you need to travel up north dear. a lot of things that are done in ancient religious books aren't continued today. jewish people spend yom kippur praying for forgiveness and fasting - no more sheep :)
