Apart from the physical consequences of being human (i.e. birth, death). What makes every being, that calls themself a being, the same?

animals are not sentient beings? interesting.
Animals are also "beings"
they are just "being" something other than human.

..and the answer to: what connects all living things is, life. of course.

Humans as sentient beings are the only species we know capable of rational thought and decision making based upon that rational thought. At some level there is a "collective consciousness" which links us all, whether that is as a result of shared experience, genetic programming or some other mechanism which we often refer to as instinct.
Most people share a fear of snakes for example, irrespective of ever having seen or been told anything about snakes.
Some of these instincts are emotional, such as a need to be loved and to love, a need for acceptance and recognition, a need to feel secure etc. These are all part of the human condition.

We aren't sentient beings. We're only the top predators because we killed the most.
