Go with Toyota or Honda. Hyundai's track record although improving is still not as good. Get a manual transmission. This will save you more on gas mileage and possible repair in the future.

For reliability it is hard to beat a Honda or a Toyota. They both have tremendous track records for quality.
Your second consideration is price and since these cars are so reliable, buying a used one could save you some serious money while keeping you in a dependable vehicle.
Cars loose most of their value in the first three years of ownership. Since you are only going to keep the car for a few years, why not save some up front money and loose less on the depreciation?
Look for a 3 or 4 year old used model at the Toyota or Honda dealership - they only keep the best ones for resale. You will save on the purchase price and on insurance coveage too.

Honda fit got a bad crash test rating, Hyundai CEO just went to jail, so i would go for the Toyota Yaris, or if you hate the feeling when your car shifts go with the Nissan Versa it has a CVT transmission but beware there are many things that you will think is wrong with it that the dealer will not tell you make sure if you get it you ask the dealer or you can email me i have the Nissan Murano its got a CVT also

Any of those 3 are currently recommended. Here is one other thing to think on... if you dont plan to travel a lot, this means you wont put a lot of miles on the car... so save even more money, and buy one that is a year or two old. Depreciation on a car can really save some dollars, and you will still wind up with a good vehicle.
Good luck.

The fit was rated the best by consumer reports. I personally would go with the fit. Thats because I currently own a honda and swear by them.
