They say what ever they have to to get elected. Most of them could care less about religion. But if they don't go to church they have no hope of getting electred.

The most educated people have typically been Christian, including most scientists. The problem is that since Darwin, those who dislike Christ have circled their wagons to keep out the others. There are, however, still plenty of very smart, very scientific Christians.
So, uh, who says the smartest people become politicians? Personally, I disagree with many people I know by not believing member of death cult Skull 'n' Bones Club George W. Bush is also a Christian. Call me weird, but I believe that if he were a Christian, he would have publicly repudiated the club. But then, it takes a smart man to con millions all at once.

I am highly educated and I am catholic. you are confusing it with scientifics who are rather agnostic than atheist.
OTOH, not all politicians are educated.
Whatsoever, politicians, or many of them, are known to be clever rather than smart or intelligent. Religion is always something that cause an impact on people, saying "God Told me" might captivate some hearts and minds, whether is true or not.
