The physical and the spiritual, at least to start out with, are inextricably connected. It is our job to separate the physical and physical pleasures (indulging in food, sex, etc.) from those of a spiritual nature. The spiritual goes beyond anything the physical body can experience normally.

The physical, mental, and spiritual are all innerconnected. For example, if you feel deep guilt for hurting someone else (spiritual), you might dwell on it (mental), and can make yourself feel physically ill (physical). It's like if you believe you're sick you can make yourself sick. Or if you want to lead a quiet, calm life (spiritually) but keep mentally and physically doing things contrary to that goal resulting in spiritual unhappiness.
