My american pit bull puppy keeps breaking out off and on with something that looks like chicken pox, and you can feel the little bumps too. I have taken him to the vet, and I plan to take him to a different one tomorrow. I wanted to know if anyone has had this happen before...

If your Vet has given him a clean bill of health, second opinion is good but you also might want to consider diet change. Mine has sensitive stomach and broke out when she was small and diet change and supplements changed that. She eats Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice, Pet Botanics Beef Log, cottage cheese, yogurt, pumpkin pie filling, crunchy dog biscuits and she takes 3V Caps for skin (from the Vet) which has Omega 3, Vit A, D and E in them.
Sometimes she gets tablescraps, but then it is a few pieces of meat or select veggies.
I also occasionally give her Frosty Paws which is a doggie ice-cream that comes in cups and is in the human ice-cream section of some grocery stores like some Randall's or Kroger's and some Super Target's.
No nutritional value there, just she loves them and it doesn't bother her skin.
Diet can make a big difference for a dog in relation to their skin condition.
Other quality foods: Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, Royal Canin, Canidae, Flint River Ranch, to name some. You may have to find what suits your dog best. Mine does not tolerate chicken or lamb well but does good with beef in the beef log and with duck, rabbit, venison and fish blends.
Here's a link about an alternative diet which is great for skin and coat:

Hi. I'm assuming your puppy was checked for mange/mites with a skin scraping? Pits are prone to this.

Also, make sure he is on a puppy food with no BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin preservative. No by-products, corn, soybean and wheat. Human grade food only. No fillers, artificial colors or flavors. I would bet this is an allergy.

Another possibility: a secondary infection from a previous skin irritation. Has the puppy had any antibiotics?

Good luck.

Sorry about your dog. It must be hard for you and your dog. I know what it is like to have to pay money when you just don't have enough. As far as the vet goes, the doctor did not break the dogs back he was just trying to fix him and he just like everyone else has to make a living. All doctors can miss something. I think to sue you would have to show the doctor was very negligent and vast majority of the average doctors in the same situation would have acted different. I think you will find that the vast majority of doctors miss something now and then. It happens. BTW I use the word doctor because all vets have a doctorate.

Certain breeds Pit Bulls and Dobermans are very prone to puppy pimples.
They can get them anywhere on their bodies and they can be hard to cure.
I had a doberman who had them bad on his back until her was about three and then grew out of them.
Sometimes it is allergy to food realter stuff or cleaning ingredients but the list can be endless and locating the source can be very expensive. My cousin spent over $5000 looking for his dogs allergy and they never did find anything.
Make sure your pup does not get infected and if he gets really bad you can put him on antibiotics to clear it up some but you do not want to use them all the time. Only when it gets bad.
Good luck.

It is most likely an allegie, either to wheat, chicken or corn. Try an hypoallergenic food, or a fish based food. Hypoallergenic can be bought from a vet, and blue buffalo is the only brand holistic food I am aware of with a fish and sweet potatoe formula food. Check those out.

Hi Jennifer

Most vets are unfamilar with food allergies. There is a top 10 hit list of the most common foods that dogs are alergic to. They are:

Beef and beef by products

Milk

Yeast

Corn and Corn Oil

Pork

Turkey

Eggs

Fish and Fish Oil

Wheat and wheat by products

Soybeans

Chicken

Lamb and Rice

Check your dog food to see what ingredients are in it. Also any treats you give your dog.

Solid Gold makes a Holistic blend, however one of my dogs with allergies are allergic to that, but it is good. You can make food by giving it 1/2 cup sweet potato, green bean and a protein your dog has not had in it's food for e.g. cottage cheese, salmon, or eggs.

You can also get your dog tested for food allergies and it will tell you what your dog is allergic to, however it costs about $160.00

Other signs of allergies are ear infections, licking of front paws, hot spots, and skin irritations.

Good Luck

It's allergies...it is very common in Pit Bulls. Change to a hypoallergenic food and supplement your dog with flaxseed oil.

Sounds like an allergy - probablly a wheat product. Ask about a special food for that. Good luck
