Dependability, and resale.

I prefer Hondas. Where I am located and most all decent sized metropolitan areas there are many shops and parts available for cheap.

Downside is that depending on the model they are high theft items. Put on a kill switch to disable the car and you have no problem.

The specific model depends on your use and price range.

The reasons to buy foreign cars are many.

1. American cars have become some of the lowest quality cars available. (Ford, GM, Chrysler)

2. Foreign cars are much more dependable. (Honda, Toyota)

3. Foreign cars retain value whereas American cars generally depreciate immediately after purchase.

4. American car companies are losing money because they employ poor business practices.

5. Foreign cars generally get better gas mileage than American cars.

6. Foreign cars are generally more technologically advanced than American cars.

I could go on...

If I were to buy a foreign car, I would begin with the two best Japanese brands (Honda and Toyota). Obviously, Acura, Lexus, and Scion are included in this search. I would also consider a BMW. If you can't find what you are looking for in those brands, then you could consider expanding your search to Mercedes, Nissan (Infiniti), and Mitsubishi (in that order).

We bought a 12 year old honda civic with 140,000 miles on it for $1800 ( a few years ago) and it ran well for 4 years and 50,000 miles. I bought a 6 year old Hyundai for 1500, drove it 4 years and sold it for 1500.

I'm all for Toyota cars.They have the longest mileage: 100,000 and over.Even though they are quite expensive,it is better to buy an expensive car a long time than to buy a flashy crap for less than a decade.
