I don't know if you should believe in God JUST so you don't go to hell. And you can't force yourself into believing anything. On the other hand, I'm not sure what "proof" you're looking for. If you ask a believer, there's proof all around. I guess the best advice I can give you, is just keep an open mind.

Well, you can't force yourself but I'm thinking God could reach your hardened heart under circumstances where your back was against the wall. Also, you might become a believer if you were in a profession that allowed you to see the state of men conscious, undrugged and at the brink of death on a regular basis the world over.
The point isn't merely to avoid hell but to obtain our inheritance in Jesus Christ. We love Him because He first loved us. Read Foxe's Book of Martyrs to see a picture of saints who lived like Christ and died for the sake of the truth. Read that truth contained in God's Word, the Holy Bible (KJV for English speaking). Read testimonies of other atheists and agnostics who converted to Jesus Christ.
How can you force yourself not to believe as that is a denial of huge evidential proportions might be the better question? You have the burden of proof, not me. So far nobody who hated God could ever disprove Him. Why bother hating Him if He doesn't exist in your mind? Futile efforts. He is a spirit and you can't put Him into a beaker yet He is evidenced everywhere whether your mind wants to acknowledge Him or not. Pay special attention to Bill Craig's link below. To be honest, you do not sound at all serious or honest. If you're not being serious or honest, then you're wasting everyone's time with your question. QED.

On the other hand, if you really mean what you ask, the answer is simple: Ask God. It's a strange reality, but it's true: No one can have any faith in God unless God gives it to them (as it tells in the first part of Romans). Tell God something like, "God, I'm not even sure if you're there, but I want to know for sure. If you are there, then show me in some way I would understand. Give me the faith to believe it."

If God is real (and He is), then He can do that.

Well, I don't believe in "Fire Insurance".
In the mean time, a lot of people think that believing in God is primitive and unscientific, I don't. At the moment it is difficult to prove God scientifically though. Mainly, you need to have faith, know that he's there in your heart. If you want Bible verses, read the Romans road, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9-10.
Heaven would be nothing without God and Jesus. And Hell is a scary place, but don't let fear rule you. We all have trouble with fear and doubt, but you can't just be a Christian to be safe from Hell, it doesn't work that way, believe me, I've tried, and all that happens is I get more afraid of Hell. Have faith. That's what you need. Ask forgiveness of your sin (all that you've done wrong), admit to it. Give yourself to God. God bless!

Well why is it that all the prophecy that has been fufilled is not proof enough?

seeing how evolution contradicts science and how Creation by God makes more sense. you should read how we did come into existance, it makes you laugh at all the people who think we evolved from monkeys.

1.monkeys are still around
2.there are no half human/hald monky creature around
3.our blood is closer to a frogs than it is a monkeys
4.our skin and organs are closer to a pigs than a monkeys, we can change organs with pigs but not monkeys, they are far too different.
5.there is no proof of life before 4000 bc (the time of creation) and all the artifacts you may find, they were buried in the massive flood, you know, thats were all the ice came from in the polar caps and how we have fossils, and how it looks like south america can it like a puzzle to africa.
6.offsprings characteristics are 100% of its biological parents, nothing changes (birth defects are defects, they arent some proof of evolution)
7.we can NOT live if one of our major organs are taken away from us (liver, stomack, brain...)so for us to survive, it all had to happen at once.
8.the first male and female were complimentary to eachother yet still opposites, so for anything to survive by reproduction, opposite genders had to form at the same time in seperate bodies. and then the kids had to become either male or female, and the others brother or sisters for the reproduction to continue.
9.it takes more than billions of billions of years for one star to form, becuase it takes gravity to form a star, and there is no gravity in space. and from what atheistic scientist have come to conclude, it takes one thing to make a star, and it takes a star to make the gas (i think thats it) that makes the star. a never ending circle. without one, its completely gone.
10.our earth is the only inhabital place that is known of, big enough of gravity to have hold on everything, small enough to where we dont die from pressure, close enough to the sun to keep us warm, far enough so that we dont burn.
11.the moon is in perfect allignment with how orbit works and the control of the tides, if it were any different then the tides wouldnt have an order or so, and the earth would be off orbit.
12.NASA created a machine that could track down the solar systems past, and when it came across a certain day thousands of years ago, it stated that time had stopped for 23 hours and 20 minutes. (Joshua 10:1-15) yet to complete the universal day, there was that 40 minutes that was missing, thats where 2 Kings 20:9-11 come in, when the sun went back 10 degrees, which is 40 minutes in time. thus conludes the these two written records were the only written records about time changing or being still. the Bible is true!
13.over 300 prophesies were made about Jesus coming, and He did just like it was said. and then more prophesies were made (2000 years ago) and now they are coming true (war on Iraq and everything in between those lines that the government is hiding from the general public {revelations 16-18 or so} {google New World Order and believe it})

God is who He says He is, not one human can prove that He doesnt exist. (telling Him to do something doesnt work, your a sinner, He wont do as you say.) creation speaks for itself. thats my proof.

What you are thinking about is called Pascal's Wager.. the point of it is that if you are unsure (or even if you don't believe) it is better to make yourself somehow before you benefit infinitely from going to heaven, and there isn't really a consequence for believing in God if he/she doesn't exist.

That being said, personally, if you don't believe, I don't think that pretending or making yourself believe will work.

If you really want to force yourself to believe in something you don't believe in I'd suggest making some nice religious friends and going to a progressive church that you enjoy.. maybe these things will influence you enough to change your opinion. Also, maybe the entire point in 'believing' and faith is that there IS no proof and thats why believing in God (and wanting forgiveness) is all you really need to do!

There is no way to FORCE yourself to believe and love God. You should try going to church or going to a bible study. If you look around, you can see how many miracles he still performs today. What kind of proof are you looking for? Look at the bible. That is actual, physical evidence that Christ came to the earth and that God does exist and does heal.

Have faith and stop looking for proof. God's Word is enough. The Bible has prov-en its self time over time. If you keep looking for proof, Satan is going to just work harder to continue to deceive you. God is real, and Satan is real.
When you stand before God, an excuse that you found no proof that He existed will not help you at all. Study His Word with an open heart.
