Usually if you don't sincerely try to repent of shortcomings or sins then we eventually become callous to the sin and it becomes easier the next time. Kind of a sorry state.

sure. That means you suppressed yourself. Why do you feel guilty ?You should search its causes. If you are guilty because you forget for praying the God so you must pray to God everyday and ask for His forgiveness. If the sin came from the relationship with other human so you must ask for forgiveness from the related person.By regreting or repenting you will feel well and you will be healthy.God is merciful and loveful.

I do not believe in God at all, and do not feel that he has any "standards"...and I feel fine. If you feel guilty, there are no long term effects. Time heals guilt. If you want to get rid of guilt faster, figure out why you feel bad, and make up for it.

That guilt is called conviction. It was not meant to kill you It is only so that you will recognise sin. However if you allow it, it can be detrimental like causiing feelings of depressions or even suicide. We as christian should know then that GODS grace is suffient and we can now come boldly before HIS throne of grace to ask forgiveness. GOD bless.

1. Eternity in hell....
2. Ulcers now....
3. Anger from the guilt....
But the import news is that you don't have to feel guilty... God forgives those who come to him with truly repentant hearts. Try Him... He loves to forgive the sinner.

Romans 8:6 - To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
I believe when you are focused on your sins and your failures that is part of setting your mind on the flesh. You need to set your mind on the Spirit and recognize who you are in Christ. Your are a beloved child of God. We all fall short, if we didn't there would be no need for the cross.
