the whole point of an slr is the quality pictures, and the speed. a cheap digital camera is slow and will take crappy pictures

Build a plexi glass case. Measure the camera, put in small crafting wood supports and padding, enough that the camera doesn't move within the case- and you're all set. You can build one for the cost of a sheet of plexi glass. Tools needed - drill glass cutter and fish tank adhesive for the joints.

We've built them and used them for video as well as still photos

Well, firstly, I don't think a plastic bag will be good enough protection.
Have you seen how much force those paintballs can strike at?
If one hits the camera, it could easily damage it.

Now, other than borrowing the 'enemies' digital SLR...which is most unlikely, lol...One solution is to buy a waterproof/shockproof case for it, which might be expensive...or buy a cheap digital camera, or buy a couple of those crappy disposable cameras which are available in film or digital versions.
I can't think of what else you could use.
Unless you become the 'official' photographer for both teams...so are allowed to move and 'shoot' freely among them to take photographs.
However, there wouldn't be a100 percent guarantee of not getting hit by 'friendly fire'.
good luck...maybe you should just leave the camera at home and just have some fun without it.

You might be better off getting a cheap digital camera for this kind of work. Canon sells waterproof containers for a lot of their cameras so you can pick a set up for about $300-400 /w memory card and not have to risk your SLR.

Check out a good online photo store. (Abes of Main, or 47th Street Photo) They sell some plastic bag covers that fit around the lens.
