I have to put in their tax information on the FAFSA form because technically I live with them (even though I live at my boyfriends apt.). I have been going to a community college and working many hours in order to pay for it out of my pocket. Now that the 2 year school is over, I am transfering to a 4year University, but I don't know how I will afford it when I don't think I am eligable for financial aid because of my parents tax situation? HELP!! =(

File the FAFSA. There's no question about taxes, just the adjusted gross income. You might be pleasantly surprised. Also, find out from your college financial aid office if your state offers any grants. You might need to file a separate gpa verification form, or something like that, to qualify, but the basic application will probably be the FAFSA.

Don't ever let $$ be the reason you don't go to college. Talk to the folks at Financial Aid. Find a part time job, cut down your expenses and get that degree!

Good luck!!

Dear Dazed ^& Confused... FILL OUT THE FAFSA! Because if u want any help, it's required! FAFSA is fed govt money programs plus each state has their OWN programs and applications for grants, loans etc... Ck even locally and apply for every opportunity u can! Don't pay someone to help you get into school. There is no charge for FAFSA or 99% of scholarships and grants. Loans carry fees and interest but some don't charge u til well after graduation... grace period.

Don't lie on FAFSA, because the FEDS don't play! Your community college financial aid counselor should be able to either calm Your fears or give u more factual info that what ur getting here.

FAFSA does ask for tax information. U can start by estimating but before they give u any help... they will seek your Fed tax information as well as certain assets, all income for all household members etc... They expect each household family as well as the student to contribute something, even those EFC with zero. Usually you'll have work/study as part of your fin aid pkge... if your not employed.

ck with college fin aid counselor wheither u independant or dependant status. U have to show how you have supported yourself for years... Don't loose hope just be agressive in pursuing your dreams.

Well, you may be eligible but the IRS may catch up with them if they haven't filed...Also, remember, you need their last year's tax return in order to file for FAFSA.

Also, who you live with has nothing to do with your fin aid. Basically, you are considered "dependent" on your parents for financial aid purposes...this is because you don't meet the requirements to be considered "independent" (through marriage, having a child, etc).

If your parents have been filing their taxes, and just owe money, go ahead and file the FAFSA. If they haven't been filing for taxes, then you have a bit of a problem.

Take Care
