People can only get away with bad behavior if other people stand by and do nothing.

SO if you do ignore the insults - you are only letting the jerks get away with it. You are teaching them that they can do whatever they want to you, with no consequences.

On the other hand, many bullies and antagonists are so slick, that any attempt to stand up to them bounces off them like teflon. When their victems dare to stand up for themselves, the victems can actually be labled the "trouble makers". The worst thing you can hear when you try to stand up for yourself against people who are insulting is "I don't care who started it - the both of you stop it." When it reaches that point, there's no hope, the person dishing out the insults has just won, again.

In my experience, the best thing you can do it make sure that the person dishing out the insults is seen for who they really are. Let the world hear their insults, and I guarantee you that people will wrinkle up their nose in disgust. You have to fade into the background, and make sure the ugly harsh spotlight is on them.

At first, this may seem like letting them win, and sure, their followers will always cheer for them, and they will initially dig all the attention. but look outside that little circle of their supporters - watch and see what happens when objective people finally see what's going on.

Most importantly, you can't ever let your image get linked to theirs. Don't ever, ever, ever fall into the trap of being told that "both of you are trading insults. both of you are just as bad." You have to always make it clear - you are the innocent - you are the target of the insults, and you are not anything at all like the person who is dishing out those insults.

It's hard - damn hard. But the end results are worth it.

The insults aimed at me personally, yes. They mean nothing to me. I know what, and who I am.

The anti-semitic insults scare the living heck out of me. It lets me know that no matter what happens...I will always be an outsider in many parts of this nation. It also never lets me forget that whether or not I am religious...I am still a Jew...with a social responsibility to other Jews.

I try to ignore them...unless I'm hearing the same insult over and over...then I start to wonder where the truth is in it! Maybe it is then time to look in the mirror and figure out what it is that everyone else seems to be seeing, that I'm not.

Yep. In my mind their not mad at me, their mad because they hate that other people don't have the same opinion. I don't insult people, because that would not be what God would want me to do. Kindness wins more than meaness.

Yes. I'm secure enough in myself and my beliefs that I can move past insults unscathed.
