A group of islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea, called the Carteret Islands, are the first recognised inhabited lands that are experiencing the world's first environmental refugees. These Islands are disappearing as a result of rising seas due to global warming and its 1500 inhabitants are already preparing to flee to the nearby Bougainville Island, though some believe that the islands could still be saved with the assistance from developed, industrial nations with perhaps the construction of a sea wall, for starters.

I had just viewed a news article on this topic, that is why I posed the question. It is not an opinion, I haven't formed an opinion one way or the other which is why I have asked for others' viewpoints. The purpose was for intelligent debate, it does not represent an opinion.

The rich should always help the poor. Just be sure not to blame the poverty of the poor on the rich.

They are not the first and they won't be the last.
Its not just industrailized nations that contribute to enviornmental problems.

First it will be 1500 then it will be millions. All they can do is emigrate. Maybe the UN could help with that.

Building a seawall is a very short term and impractical solution.

It's not worth it to build a sea wall - the sea will surge and cover the islands in time no matter what.

And, how can you pinpoint who is to blame...are all the people with cancer and asthma going to begin to charge all industrial nations for the dirty air and cut-down trees?

I mean, how do you proceed with this line of reasoning so that it is realistic and manageable?
