I could do a lot more good if I didn't spend all my time on Yahoo Answers mocking god.

By "religion", you mean doing things like volunteering at the homeless shelter, handing out free turkey dinners to the poor around thanksgiving time (boy, THAT was time consuming -- it took a whole day), and packing medical supplies to ship to poor hospitals in third world countries?
Yea, if I weren't religious, think about how I could be helping humanity by watching TV or sleeping in on weekends like an atheist while all of those Christians are wasting all of their time helping those no benefit to society poor people.
I think that I see your point --- NOT

Do you think you could live without oxygen?
Anyway, your question is in a way correct, because most of us now are very much consumed withreligion not anymore to the AL MIGHTY...we tend to be more focus now of the things which our religion teaches us..not by the fact that in God's love we are not under the world's law..with regards to how we praise and glorify Him.
Source of joy, brother is universal in such a way that "it is something which gives us joy' but it is also relative in such a way that we don't have same preferences of where or whom that joy will come from.

I am so much more free to do those things SINCE I became a Christian, than I ever was as an atheist. I am so much more "others-centered" now. Prior to Christ coming into my life, I was a self-absorbed, hard-hearted, cynic.
Today, I look at people with compassion, serve in a food bank, counsel those who are hurting, and also long to see everyone I meet come to Christ. It is like what Paul said to the court, as he was headed to Caesar: "...I wish to God that not only you but everyone listening to me today would become what I am..." (Acts 26:29c)
As to my old way of life, I can again quote from Paul: "What benefit did you get from doing those things you are now ashamed of? For those things resulted in death." (Romans 6:21)

How much more good could we do without the relentless pursuit of money and power? Religion is just one of the tools the power-seeking use to control people, so they can accumulate all the wealth. As long as there are people willing to listen to the manipulators, religion will always be with us.
*Edit* Just for the record, before I get any more "thumbs down," I'm a nurse, and have been caring for the less fortunate for 30 years. Since I don't see a lot of so-called "Christians" knocking on the doors to help us care for all these folks, you can keep your superior attitudes to yourselves. We take care of the people the nose-holding "charities" have long since turned their holier-than-thou backs on.

Hey yeah! I could join one of the many atheist based missionary groups and go feed the hungry, house the homeless and spread the good news that we are all just meaningless clusters of random chemicals destined to die and that's it. Sounds great!
