my mom says we can't have one because we don't have a fenced yard and we live on a hill where there are wild animals (ie: deer, raccoons, foxes, etc.). My boyfriend and I have offered to build a kennel for the dog in a spot where there is room (either on my small deck [only my brother and I have access to it] or right infront of said deck) and she didn't say anything. My boyfriend has 14 dogs and knows how to build a kennel, what else can I do to convince her?
I'm very capable of caring for a dog, I help with my boyfriend's and also I have many pets of my own (2 guinea pigs, 2 parakeets, 3 goldfish).

EDIT:
When I say small deck, I don't mean smaller than 3 feet. I mean small in relation to my other, much longer, deck. The deck by my room is at least 5 feet by 10-12 feet.
Also, my boyfriend only owns 2 of the 14 dogs, the rest are the property owners (my boyfriend and his parents are caretakers). And all the dogs they have are from shelters or rescued off the street.

ANOTHER EDIT:
When I say kennel I do not mean I'm going to force the dog to stay there. It will only be in the kennel for outside play and the like. But mostly it will be in the house with me. As for breed of dog, I'd love to get a black lab because my mom used to have one and I know she misses him.
I can't bring one of my boyfriend's dogs home because they aren't all trained and most of them are only able to interact with his family/the property owner. Again, they aren't all his dogs.

Dogs need to be part of your family, not living in a kennel. Wait until you are older, have your own place and can have a family pet and not a neglected outside dog.

Dogs are pack animals by nature and should live with you, not outside from you.

You mentioned your mum said no to a dog but she when you mentioned building a kennel she said nothing. This tells me she is really undecided on your request for a dog.???
You didnt mention what size dog you wanted either, it makes a big difference as to the breed and size of dog you want.
Correct training can prevent attacks on wildlife. Perhaps you could also build a small fenced yard out the back.
Mention to your mum not just about the kennel but fencing, training, exercising and the breed of the dog you would like. You may even want to add to the dogs upkeep which will show your mother you are willling to take on responsiblity for food etc.
Good luck and make a wise choice in the breed of dog for the area you have available.

Why get a dog if you have to confind it to a kennel out back? It's not going to be an inside dog? a PET?! a dog should be part of the family. crates are a good training tool if dogs are destructive when you're not home, but to keep them in it for hours on end is cruel. And besides that, you don't need a kennel, get a dog run for when the dog is outside. If you wont be able to let the dog inside, dont bother getting one, dogs are social creatures and need to be with people or other dogs, not by themselves outside.

Why don't you help your boyfriend take care of his 14 dogs? You certainly don't need to add another one to that mix.

Also, dogs don't belong in kennels on decks. They belong in homes. If your mom won't let you have a dog in the house, you shouldn't get a dog and keep it on a deck just because YOU want one. That's selfish.

Spend time with the 14 dogs. If there are that many dogs, they are probably starved for attention. Take them for walks. Teach them tricks. Brush and groom them. See if your mom will let you bring one of them home for visits. Try that first.

I say go for it. If you can handle 2 guinea pigs, 2 parakeets, and a goldfish, then there is no reason why you can't have a dog. Besides I live on a hill and have bears that live in the back of the woods by my house, and we have a fence so that my dog is safe. I don't see why you can't. Hope it works out and Good luck to ya!!!

Well, if your boyfriend really knows how to build kennel, then show your mom one that he has already biult for his dogs and show that he is really good at it. Tell her he'll built you the same good kennel and your dog will be absolutley safe. Maybe your boyfriend's parents can convince your mom to agree on a dog since they lived with dogs in kennels for some time already? Good luck!!

Its not a big problem if it is an indoor dog. I have had 2 German Shepherds already at once, and my yard wasnt fenced in, but they were in the house most of the time, and when they did want out, we would tie them. Our yard went up into the woods back in Pennsylvania, and there was lots of wild game there also. If they are tied out for short periods of time, it is alright. I really enjoyed my dogs being inside most of the time. They enjoyed being near myself and my family, and they protected us from intruders! Good luck!
