to accentauate words in spanish follow these rules
1. if the stressed silable is the last one (última sílaba) Ex. cayó, persecución.
and the word ends with a vowel or n or s it should be accentuated. If it ends with any other letter do not accentuate. Ex. mirador
2. if the stressed silable is the one before the last (penúltima sílaba) it should be accentuated if it does not end with vowel or n or s. Ex casada, fútbol.
3. if the stressed silable is the befrore, before the last 9antepenúltima sílaba) It should always be acentuated.

Rule of thumb rules:
1. Most Spanish words automatically have the accent on the next to the last syllable and you don't have to put the accent marke there.
But 2. Words that end in L or R have the accent on the last syllable. (No mark needed.)
If the accent comes in a different place than these two rules show then put the accent mark.
Exceptions. Si' means yes. Si (no accent) means if.
I think Que' has one as well.
Aqui' is an example of the accent being on the last syllable even though it doesn't end in l or r, so you have to put the accent mark.

There are three groups of words in spanish depending on the syllable you pronounce with more emphasis.
1. Agudas: emphasis on the last syllable. Ex: AviÓN, maTRIZ, computaDOR
2. Graves: emphasis on the next to last syllable. Ex: LIbro, esFEra, CArro.
3. Esdrújulas: emphasis on the syllable before the next to last. Ex: esDRÚjula, BRÚjula, maquiaVÉlico.
Now for the rules.
1. Agudas: mark the accent when they end in N, S, or a vowel. Ex: avión (ends in N), matriz (ends in z, therefore don't mark the accent)
2. Graves: mark the accent when they don't end in N, S or a vowel. Ex: árbol (doesn't end in N, S or vowel)
3. Esrújulas: always mark the accent regardless of its ending. Ex: máquina.

Listen to how the word is pronounced - normally the stress is on the second to last syllable. Exceptions to that rule are characterized by an accent mark.

Most nouns finishing in ón and having a vowel before it as in camión, canción, león. Some others just finishing in ón after a consonant: limón, tesón.
Verbs in past and future: yo canto/ yo canté/ yo cantaré
present past future
The best way is try to learn them by heart from a good Spanish grammar book. Good luck!!!

there are many rules to it, you'll either have to learn those or just remember which word has accents on it.
