My son is 19 and a fulltime student. He made a little money last year. When he received his w2, I said I would take care of it. I had selected single for him on his return, Well what I did is that I put him as the taxpayer, when it should have been myself, because when I went to file mine it was rejected, because I had my son as the taxpayer on his return, so now I have to file an amended 1040 x return. I am just not sure how to fill it out correctly Any help would be so appreciated at this point. Thank you.

I have never done an ammended form before. Would the form have both our names and ssn's? I filed single for him on the original, now what would I file? What would the differences be? I guess I am confused because I have always done my own taxes and not one for my son. Thank you in advance.

Your son is the taxpayer. Did you mark the box on his return that says "yourself" in the dependent section? If so that is your problem. You are the taxpayer on your return, he on his. He must file as a student. You are entitled to the dependent exemption for him as he is a student and you provide over 1/2 of his support. 1040X is pretty easy, just put all of the original numbers in the first column, then put the correct numbers in the last. The difference between the two goes in the middle. You will likely have no differences until you get to the standard deduction section and the tax computation.

Are you trying to say that you filed is return as NOT being a dependent, and now are trying to claim him because you are eligible to? If so, you (or he) need to file an amended return for him that shows him as a dependent. He might or might not have to pay back some taxes for this. You wouldn't show up anywhere on his return.

File your own return on paper, by mail. You won't be able to efile yours until his gets straightened out, and by the time the amendment catches us with his return, it could be after the due date.
