Aloha Malahine, (visitor)
Born and Raised in the islands, Kauai-Oahu, there are all the same. I know live in Las Vegas after 42 years of struggling to live in my home state. I did figure-out that the freight is about 35 to 40% of the gross cost for products and the mark-up percentage is usually 300% from the wholesale price.
Example: you can get milk for $5.99 if you find a grocery store that can keep up with the demand but the average cost per gallon is $7.99.
Sweetheart this is just milk can you imagine rent-
On Kauai the lowest rental is $975.00 to $4500.00 per month, as they told us, it's the cost of living in paradise...
I suggest visiting first then make your decision. My family in deep in the government and they do not have a clue to all the suffering that goes on, until I said "forget this" I'm leaving because I am tried of being overworked, under-paid.

In general things are very expensive. Especially restaurant food. If you go to Honolulu perhaps a bit less than the other islands. Bring lots of money but its worth it. If u are visting, try renting a condo. Its the most economical method.

from what i've heard all of hawaii is very expensive, since just about everything has to be brought into the state...my one nephew was stationed there while in the navy and after he got out they tried to stay there but had to come back to the mainland because it was just too expensive to live there
