John was J*sus' cousin, and they were both Jews. In Judaism, there is no thing like baptism (I would know, I'm Jewish) so how did John get the idea (in the words of my close friend) to go "dum dum dum sprinkle sprinkle new religion" Not to be disrespectful, of course, I would really appreciate some comprehensive answers.

1. The question isn't why did JOHN decide to baptize J*sus, it is why did John decide to BAPTIZE J*sus...see the difference? emphasis is elsewhere. As in, where did the concept of being baptized come from?

2. I do not misspell J*sus to be disrespectful to Xtianity, but out of respect for my own religion. I do not believe in J*sus as G-d, so I cannot spell out his name. I do the same for any other deity. (note that in Xtian I use the Greek letter X to try and do the word justice)

I have read the New Testament once, it doesn't give a reason as to why J*sus told John to baptize him, and I don't have a copy to refer to, I'm Jewish and don't really have the need for one in my daily life.

Guys, again, it wasn't why it was John who did it and not someone else, it was why John baptized him and didn't do something else. John was Jewish and baptizing is not a Jewish practice, so where did it come from?

Jews of the 1st Century AD had ablutionary rituals of purification before they did anything holy. There are holy pools of water at the entrances of all the synagogues of the era. Immersing oneself in water to achieve spiritual purification was in no way foreign to Jewish people in this era. And John the Baptist was not the only baptiser.

The New Testament book of Luke, Chapter 3 verse 1,3: "Now the word of God came to John....and he came into all the district around the Jordan preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.."
So John received his commission directly from God. Earlier in the book, chapters 1:1-25 and also 2:57-80 are recorded the miraculous circumstances surrounding his birth.
His primary ministry was to introduce Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (See John's Gospel, Chapter 1)
When John hesitated to baptize Jesus, Jesus told him to allow it, because it was necessary to "fulfill all righteousness." (Matthew 3:13-17)
I believe one reason He submitted to John's baptism was to testify to the validity of John's ministry, by submitting to his baptism, though as a Christian I believe Jesus Christ was the sinless Lamb of God.

john was preparing the way for the one calling in the wilderness. john was baptizing at the river jordan and jesus wnated to be baptized,at this point john argued that jesus should be the one to baptize him, however john baptized jesus at which point the holy spirit filled jesus and his ministry began. for christianity baptism replaced circumcision and in the catholic church confirmation replaces the bar mitzva(no idea how to spell it...) scripturecatholic.com may help you better as would the study courses on salvationhistory.com,the lessons are free. you may not agree with it all but it would answer most if not all of your questions.

That wasn't designed to be disrespectful? Yipes if that was unintentional, I'd hate to see right between the eyes. It was Jesus who asked John to baptize him. People read before you ask a question! sheesh. This forum is not any fun if there's no real questions asked.

First of all, John did not decide to baptize Jesus. Jesus bade him to, and John said that Jesus should baptize him, and Jesus said to John, suffer me this. When John immersed Jesus and he rose from the water, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove landed on Jesus' shoulder, and a voice came from heaven, saying "This is my Son in whom I am well pleased.

Jesus was told by God to have his cousin John to babtize him. Jesus was setting the example for all of humanity that you must be babtized by being put completely under water with someone first saying a prayer and then babtizing you under water. That is why.

John the baptist was using baptism as his way of spreading faith in jesus.
Jesus's idea was to make himself humble, (dine with tax collectors and sinners, etc.), so he asked John, the same man who said "I am not worthy to even wash his sandals", to baptise him.
