The story was devised by Washington's boyhood friend, Myron Schlobotnik. Myron aspired to be a writer and had planned to include that tale in a collection of short stories. Little George chopped the English Cherry Tree while playing in the Garden... When his father found it, he asked "who chopped down his beloved cherry tree" Little George cried out " I cannot tell a lie, It was I who chopped down the cherry tree"....... Little George was commended for telling the truth and learned at an early age that telling the truth was best. He did, however, spend a part of his life re-planting...... A story by Weese I believe.

The answer is: Parson Weems. He made up the story to illustrate a point. But it got into folk lore and has become part of our culture. The story of Washington tossing a dollar across the Potomac is also false.

I think it was made by an unknown writer or someone to "Heroitize" him, making him a role model for Americans. Another example of this is how in the cartoons, They make Lincoln's voice seem very deep, and booming. That is how we picture a man who fought for honorable causes. The people that were there to have heard him, in documents, that his voice was actually very high and unpleasant.
