He is a Golden Retriever and is having his first birthday so I want to make it special. I was thinking of inviting other people and letting them bring their dogs too so they can play, but I want to know your input of the theme ideas, activities, food selection etc. By the way, does anyone have any healthy dog snack/cake recipes I can use for the party?

GET LOTS OF RETRIEVER TOYS for your puppy!!! My dog was ecstatic on his first birthday!
Doggy birthday cake = dry food ground up + wet food mixed in and then molded into a cake shape with dog bones as "candles". I swear, it works. Little expensive, but hey, I'm a dog nut.
Do invite other people and their dogs! It will be enjoyable for all!

Try some local pet stores that make cakes and bakery treats just for dogs! Sometimes they can make them a special shape or flavor and it's a good treat for your birthday doggy and doggy friends.

My dog also love these toys called Egg Babies and Hide a Bee. It's a stuffed toy with squeak toys inside and the point of the game is to let your dog find out how to remove them from the big stuffed toy. There are also toys that you can hide treats inside and maybe you could have a game where the dogs can have a race for which dog can remove the squeak toy and/or treat fastest! Have fun!

Okay, this is a fun question. I have hosted many doggie birthdays and have catered birthdays and puppy showers. Just like human parties, decide on a theme, and then go from there. One thing different, be absolutely sure that none of the dogs you invite are food aggressive. Typically a responsible owner knows if their dog is and will not bring them -- if there are any questions ask them to go to the time out area and eat separately from the other guests. By the way, it is good to have a separate, quiet time out room that dogs and their owners can go to if it gets to be too much. It is fun to have doggie bags filled with treats for the guests to take home with them. An easy way to make a cake is to take firm, bakery type whole wheat bread and cut into cake like layers. Fill with ground cooked liver (or liverwurst). Frost with a mix of cream cheese and unsweetened whipped cream. Decorate as for a human cake avoiding anything chocolate. Okay, here are some themes:

Mexican fiesta: Humans get mexican food. Dogs get a pinata filled with treats. Human kids get to hit the pinata with a bat, dogs scramble for treats. Party hats are sombreros

Treasure hunt: Hide bits of peanut butter or liverwurst sandwiches outside in a fenced yard. Dogs get to hunt for them.
Host dresses as pirate with parrot and eye patch.

Surprise party: Send out invitations but admonish dogs and their people not to "spill the beans".

Western ranch theme: Each attending dog gets a bandana to wear (preferably with their name on it). Have a BBQ for the humans. Have a weinie bob (hot dogs in big water container) Cowboy hats for humans and dogs

The dog would not care. Dogs are entirely comfortable with a raw meaty bone. My dogs love going going for walks, and chomping on uncooked meats. They are in Heaven doing that. And, yes, your canine would not be aware of or care it can be his birthday. My dogs are on a raw diet, go jogging quite a bit, and many others., so daily is like a birthday to them. Dogs additionally don't know or care about Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc.

Sounds fun. I think if you could set up "games" for your dog and his friends to play - with their owners, it would be fun. Try ball chasing games, definietly bubbles, and perhaps treat bags. You could do a tennis ball, a rawhide, etc. in a cute mesh bag - maybe a collar/leash from a dollar store with some baubles sewn on? How about a "kitty hater' cake (b/c it is for dogs) in the theme of a cat litter box - look up "kitty litter cake" on the internet, the only thing I can remember is toostie rolls for the "gifts" from the cat - good luck

The canines would not care. dogs are thoroughly happy with a raw meaty bone. My dogs love going operating, and chomping on raw meats. they're in Heaven doing that. And, certain, your canines would not comprehend or care that is his birthday. My dogs are on a raw weightloss plan, flow operating plenty, etc., so each day is type of a birthday to them. dogs also do not comprehend or care about Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc.

Well, our boy Brutus just turned 4 Jan.25th.We have had a birthday party for him each year.We get a plain cup-cake and put his candle in the middle (we don't light it),and sing happy birthday to him. Then we spread all his new doggie toys out in front of him,and he goes wild with joy and finally picks one out for us to play fetch with him.we take loads of pictures and videos also. He's a toy poodle who loves and is loved beyond words. You might want to consider only having one other dog besides yours
because too many will take away the excitement of your Lab's 1st.birthday,because they may have disagreements
with each other. He needs to be the center of attention this first time, and all the rest.Good luck.I hope I helped.
