antibiotics if it is truly an infection... but many of us keep infections under control with cranberry juice.

You might be thinking of a UTI or a urinary tract infection. Typically a Dr will prescribe an appropriate antibiotic based on the sensitivity from the lab. That means the lab that grew the bacterial culture within test a range of antibiotics to see which antibiotic does the job of killing the infection. It could be Cipro, Macrodantin, Septra or many others.
If it is indeed a kidney infection, there is accompanying pain in the lower back, elevated BUN or creatnine, then you probably have pyelonephritis or a kidney infection. That is very serious and you should be admitted to a hospital and the nephrologists need to hammer that infection quickly. They should start a mixed course of ampicillin and gentamycin IV or similar.

The standard antibiotic prescribed for a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a sulfa drug, usually Trimethoprim Sulfa, a.k.a. Bactrim. It's a large pill taken with a full glass of water 3 times per day for 3 days. This medication is fairly inexpensive - around $5 if dispensed in a hospital pharmacy.

If a urinary tract infection is left untreated it can lead to a kidney infection. Kidney infections can be serious but are treated more aggressively with antibiotics. A kidney infection left untreated can lead to death.

Cranberry juice is an urban myth. Sometimes bladder infections/uninary tract infections can go away on their own if you drink enough water. Drinking enough water helps flush the bacteria out of your bladder.

If you have any of the following symptoms, please seek medical help immediately: fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, dull pain in your upper back on either side near your shoulder blades.

If you do not have those symptoms but are experiencing some other kind of pain, you should still seek the advice of a medical professional.

An antibiotic, and you're getting some bad info here. In children, a strep throat or tonsillitis can progress to a kidney infection. It may not show up as anything more than increased urination, but it urgently needs to be treated if you suspect it. Untreated, it can destroy part of the kidneys and lead to problems later in life.

if you have a kidney infection you would be in a hospital. I know that for sure,my daughter had one and she was in BAD pain. You get the pain in the flanks(along the side nearing the back)also when you tap the back where the kidney is it will HURT. You will have also have a fever.

I don't remember the name of the meds,it was given intravenously. If you have the flank pain it will be a kidney infection, there is no mistaking it.

I'm so sorry you have a UTI. I have had plenty of those and they are not fun. The macrobid should take a day before you start feeling better and few days until you are feeling back to your normal self. Your symptoms of nausea, back pain and diarrhea actually sound like labor. You might want to go to L&D just to be checked out for that. At least call your dr and let her know all your symptoms.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
