People are always bored while in the hospital. Bring some interesting magazines - they're nicer than books because they aren't as serious and you can read just one article. If you get interrupted by the nurses and doctors that are always coming in, it's harder to lose your place.
Or maybe a book of Su Doku puzzles (Japanese number puzzles - very popular) or crossword puzzles, a small kit to make a bracelet or knit a scarf (can find at any craft store), or anything else you think she might enjoy to keep her occupied.
Of course, this depends how sick she is. If she can't enjoy any of these things, then something to decorate the room is probably the best bet. If not flowers, maybe a small potted plant she can put on her desk or at home when she gets out, or a balloon boquet.
Perhaps a stuffed animal? Especially if she has kids, even if she doesn't like it she can give it to them.
Something to make her hospital stay more comfortable? A soft throw blanket or nice slippers?
Final idea - a heartfelt card with a gift card for a restaurant. You could write about how it's "for a nice dinner when you get out and are dying for real (not hospital) food"
Let me know what you decide - I'm curious! Good luck! :)

I think it would help to know some of your boss's likes and dislikes.
For example, if you know that she likes to read, try to find out if it's mysteries or humour or historical novels.
For someone who is recuperating from illness, humour may be a good uplifter! ...but make sure you know her preferences or tastes in humour.
If you're thinking of getting her a book, a paperback would be less strenuous than a hardback (much heavier!). Also, pick something with a reasonable sized font. It wouldn't do to have here exhausted from all the squinting!
What about here favourite magazines?
And, depending on her mood, some nice companionship in the form of your presence, some light chatting (know her favourite topics? Her hobbies?) might be the best present yet.
So, do bring some of her favourite fruit or snacks and spend a little time with her.
Sometimes, companionship does not necessarily mean a lot of chatter! Just having someone there with you; doing little things like cutting pieces of fruit; and, most important, a pair of empathetic ears, might just be what's appreciated the most.
Watch for signs of weariness and she might tire easily. Then, it's a sign to back off and leave. I suppose that several short trips might be better than one or two long ones!
You could also offer to get some chores done for her - to ease her mind about things such as getting her dog or goldfish fed, etc.
Ultimately, you'd be the best judge as you know her.
Best wishes to you and to her too!

i'm guessing since you are asking this in food & drink you are looking for food related ideas. first thing to consider when choosing something is to find out if your boss has any food restrictions while they are in the hospital. some people might be on a liquid restriction diet if they are really sick. if there are no restrictions to the food allowed you might want to bring in something other than chicken noodle soup. sometimes a pasta dish or homemade bread/muffins can make someone feel better because they are loaded with carbohydrates and aren't necessarily associated with being sick the way chicken noodle soup is. sometimes a good hearty meal can heal the soul more than all the medicine in the world

Bring her the work that she's missing that will keep her mind of off what ever is wrong with her. What about a small pocket game she could play with the other patients,a book of cross word puzzles, a jig saw,a colouring in book and some pens,a note pad and some stamps to write to people.

i have been in the hospital 3 times and hospital food flat out stinks. If she is allowed to eat food that isn't off a special diet then bring her
-her fave drink
-her fave food (if its not 2 hard)
-a book or magazine
oh and before you go call and ask her if there is anything she wants!

Cat. That's a really nice thought. I'd say an embroidery pattern if she's in there for a while.
