Choose your topic and be sure that it is narrow enough that you do not have to go through a lot of extranneous stuff.
Get a bunch of 3x5 cards for two sets of data
The first set of 3x5's: make sure that you have the full reference to each with the proper citation and page numbers
The second set of 3x5's: on one side be sure to reference back to the full citation of the card in the first set; this is the hardest part: write a short summary of the theme of each part of the reference.
When you have so many of those that you think that your fingers are going to fall off, then put them together, storyboard (look this up) as it were, until you have a cohesive whole.
Make your outline of this. Now here is where mistakes are made: do not be too thorough on the outline, just a taste of the body of text here.
Now write to the outline using the cards as data; use your own words-- you've read the stuff and you have a card to make sure that you don't screw up the data. This takes time so start it all early, a little at a time so you do a good job and do not scrimp on data. Be sure not to be redundant.
When you are making a good point, you might find multiple references, put them in the proper format.
Good luck and I am glad that I don't have to do it anymore.
