Try to donate to small organizations that operate in your local region. When you donate to large organizations, a lot of the money doesn't go to helping people, but just to keeping the organizations running. Smaller organizations cost less to keep organized, so more of your money goes to actually helping the cause, whatever it may be.
I don't know what's in your area, but if you're interested I'm sure there are ways of finding out.

Depends on what you are passionate about. I have family that died of breast cancer, so I donate to them. I also always make it a point to give back to my community. I donate to the local food banks, candles for kids, toys for tots, and the local womens shelter.

whatever cause you feel strongly about. check out the charity first though, and make sure they are totally non-profit, and don't have high paid CEOs where your donation will be going to.
