Medela is by far the best brand, but it is costly. If you are planning on being very commited, it's worth it to buy an electric pump. But if you are wanting to just make the occasional bottle, then you can buy a hand pump from Medela that works very well. That is what I used, though one weekend I did use the whole electric thing from the hospital and lemme tell you, trying to double pump and adjust the controls at the same time was the single most ackward thing I've ever done!
The things we'll do for our kids...
Don't be tempted to buy a cheapy brand just because it costs less- they have to sell it cheap for a reason. And don't buy a battery operated one. They don't work at all.
My sister-in-law had a hand pump, but I can't remember for sure the brand. I think it was Avent. I tried to use it once in a pinch (my son was at his Grammy's house), but I couldn't get it to work AT ALL. I ended up having to hand express a little and then change shirts and rush home to get my own pump.
Anyway, the Medela brand is definately the best. It's also what hospitals recommend.
Good luck and congratulations!

Electric is the best! And you don't need a double pump. You can pump after the baby feeds, but usually switch sides to pump each time. The hospitals even let you rent the TOP RATED pumps sometimes. Lactation Consultants in your phone book can help. Manual pumps really do not have the suction or gentleness that electric ones do. Plus, with the manual ones, you have to use both hands, which means you have no free hand to massage the breast being pumped. Manual pumps really are a waste of money and of your precious time. They leave many moms frustrated.
Congratulations on your baby!! And I really congratulate you for choosing to breastfeed! It is the best for the baby and you!! Not only for nutrition, but for bonding. Great job!!!
The top ones that I've seen are (in order): White River Electric--getting about 175 mg/60 minutes; Medela--with about 125 mg/60 minutes; Gentle Expressions--about 122 mg/60 minutes; and Hand with about 75 mg/60 minutes. You can look for a complete assessment of all the pumps readily available on the market in the 'Breastfeeding Product Guide' by Kittie Frantz.

Manual pumps no good, get eclectic and make sure it takes batteries. Madella is the best if you can't afford one hospitals rent them, and its not gross, the parts are all new, its just the pump it self you rent. Other wise most any electric pump is good, most likely the more expensive the less it will hurt. It's not whether or not it will work, just how much less pain you will receive from it. I have found that if you spend about a $100 you will get a good one. I have never used a double and don't think I would seems a little bit harder, good luck. Hand ones, no good!

Congrats. I use the avent manual pump for about 70$ Canadian. I love it. It works great and doesn't hurt. Easily transportable as well. I originally bought a first year electric and it was crappy. The milk would get sucked up into the mechanical part and it hurt. I found the manual quicker and more effective. I wouldn't spend the big bucks either, but that's just me. Good luck

The Medela In Style is the best pump out there, IMO. The electric work much better than the hand pumps...

medela is the best brand. if you are going to REALLY breastfeed, a double pump is the way to go. yes, you definitely want an electric. the manual ones take so long and do not pump as well. medela's can be expensive, but they sell them pretty cheap on ebay.

If you work for a company, or the father does, check and see if they have a lactation program. They can get you a great deal on a pump. Check with the HR.
