I think there are a number of factors.
- Small towns are extremely boring and teens don't have a lot to do.
- In some cases, abstinance education.
- Parents refusing to discuss sexuality.
- Low self esteem in girls, who believe that sex = love or that they aren't worth anything without a man expressing interest in her via sex.
- Definitely religion because sex is often viewed as evil and bad and something to be ashamed of. So no one talks about it openly.

Are you kidding?! The south doesn't corner the market on teen pregnancy....the north is pretty bad. And I'm originally from Michigan. Lived there 34 years and over a year ago moved down here to Georgia. You a person who hates southern folks? I really get sick of bigots in this forum. Southern people are the nicest people I have met in my 35 + years.

Because we do not have adequate sex education in our public schools. The strong religious majority really do put up a fuss when it comes time for children to learn about safe sex. They will teach only abstinence and do not teach about condoms etc... However they do provide daycare in the school for teenage mothers??? To me that's like offering rehab to someone who has suffered a head injury in a motorcycle accident yet not telling them that a helmet could have prevented the whole thing?! As a parent of 4 girls in Kentucky I make it a priority to teach my children about safe sex. So far it has worked but the situation is really bad for some teens. My 12 year old has a classmate who is expecting...It makes me ill!

To those bashing the south, have you ever even been here? Have you ever heard of generalizing? The entire south isn't a bunch of inbred rednecks if you would even take the time to find that out. I could say the same thing about Boston. About how they are all idiots because they thought a blinking light cartoon was a terrorist bomb. Think people. There is a reason we have that thing in our head.

Kings County, CA, has the highest teen pregnancy rate out of any other county in California. The reason... We have a lot of religious immigrants.

It is a trend in today's society to get pregnant before marriage. Some people choose to wait, like me. But coming this generation, teens are being pressered more and more to do it.

Because they believe in starting a family early and they do not believe in abortion. I would bet that the inner city is just as bad.
