One of my neighbors has a dog. I don't know which house but I hear him every morning. It seems like he's the only dog on the whole block. I don't recall hearing it at night, so it probably has a bed inside.
But every day when I'm getting ready for work it barks every 5-10 seconds. I never hear its owners or another dog. Ever. My question is since dogs are pack animals, is it inhumane to leave one outside by itself?

you are a great person being concerend about a poor little animal, and i dont want to say its cruel but, it kinda is. if that dog is lonely it needs to have more attention.like the first guy said ask them if you could walk their dog and say your doing a walking dog buisness.(you dont have to walk anyother dog then that one)

No the family is the dog pack they get along just fine. The people above don't know what they are talking about. It is not inhumane to leave a dog by it self. Some people can't or don't want 2 dogs or 2 cats.If the animal is took care of feed water loved a good house to live in a family to play with then what is missing. We need to look and see how many animals are not took care of tied up all the time no food or very little or not thee right kind,no water,no dog house to get into out of the weather or no one to love it then that is inhumane. They don't need another dog or a cat don't need another cat they have PEOPLE now.

No, it is not inhumane. But, that does not mean they don't want to seek companionship - canine, human or otherwise. If the owner was gone during the day, the dog would be just as alone inside as outside. That said, dogs are social critters, which may be part of the reason it barks as it does in the morning. It smells other dogs, other people, all of that breakfast cooking, and wants to be part of that.

Not really. To a domesticated dog, it's human family is it's pack. It's inhumane to NEVER pay attention to a dog, but leaving him alone all day is not cruel.
If you're worried about his barking every 5-10 seconds, you should talk to your neighbors.

As long as the dog is getting plenty of attention from the owners it is not inhumane. the amount of attention needed depends on the breed of dog. Some are more high maintenance than others. There are just some dogs that are barkers too. This also depends greatly on the breed and a little on the personality of the dog.

Dogs are pack animals and the family is its pack. A short duration of barking doesn't indicate anything significant. Leaving the dog outside is far from inhumane. Sometimes we tend to forget that dogs are not humans.

Some dogs do better by themselves depending on temperment. But some are extreme pack animals and really do need another dog around. If the dog has humans around all day, they will be fine, but if left alone, they get depressed and lonely, just like people.

No its not cruel, it really depends on the dogs personality. Some dogs might be upset if its owner got another dog because it might be really happy getting all the attention and not having to share its owner when they are home.

I don't know. Is it better to leave two dogs outside by themselves? Once a dog becomes a pet, it considers the humans as it's pack which is why dogs can be loyal, obedient, protective and want to be where it's humans are.

No it's not cruel although I dont know how bad it would feel being the only dog in the block. As long as he's well socialized by his owners or family, he's fine.

I think it's really sad to leave a dog by itself all day. I believe that if somebody can't be with the dog at regular intervals throughout the day you should have two. They are social creatures and need something to occupy themselves with during the day. I think the same goes for cats and other pets as well.
