I tried H&R Block but they want about $45 to do both federal and state, I was wondering if there is a better deal out there. Thanks!

Actually, H&R Block wants about a $45 base fee. The cost increases for each form they must complete to file your returns, and increases more if you have a significant amount of W-2's.
The same basic concept applies to all the Brand Name tax preparation places. Where I work, our base fee is $80, but our per form fees are less. Our closest competition has a lower base rate, but their fees per form are higher. Average returns on just a single person with no dependents, maybe EIC or education credit, is roughly $85-90. You can watch your local flyers for coupons as well.

I swear by Jackson & Hewitt. It isn't what you pay them, it is what they save you. These people are highly trained as a general rule.

I also have a private tax accountant i have used for 25 years; you might want to look under accountants in the yellow pages and find a good local private accountant. They are more personal and really work to protect you.

good luck

The IRS will do it for free. All you have to do is call them up, tell them what you have and tell them you have no idea how to fill it out. They'll ask you some questions to see if you qualify for any exemptions and then sit there on the phone with you and walk you through it while you fill in the numbers on the tax form(s).

And you don't even have to tell them who you are.

For Free, go to the library, pick up the forms and directions and do it yourself. $45 is pretty cheap, remember, you get what you pay for.
