I don't play games or mess with people's heads. I am honest and open about my feelings, so when i say, "I'm sorry, but i don't feel the same about you. I just want to be friends." I still feel like a jerk.

This seems to be happening more frequently, the last year or so.

How can I truthfully tell someone I don't love them without breaking her heart? Is a sweet lie better than the harsh truth? That seems to be the desired reaction.

It sounds very much as though the declarations of love have been premature. Generally one falls in love as part of a process in which two people get closer and they both recognize and participate on a fully aware basis. That's a long winded way of saying they aren't really in love the way it is generally defined. If you aren't doing things to lure them into the declaration, a gentle statement of the truth is the best you can do. You aren't responsible for their emotions getting ahead of reality.

I guess first I would say why are all these women "falling in love" with you, are you sending them mixed signals? If someone professes there love for you, there isn't any way you can't not hurt them. Never lie about feelings, but if you don't have the same or similar feelings for them, why are you leading them on?

Its easy to just say that your not ready for love yet and you like her too much to mess up your friendship by taking it farther. if you are nice about it when you are tell her this she should be OK. The only time you would be a jerk is if you strung her along and let her think you could be MORE that just friends. Hope it helps sugar :-)

It's much more hurtful to treat them with pity as if they can't survive without you. Give them some respect, they'll live. Be a stand-up guy and tell them the truth.

Any kind of lie shows your character.

The sweet lie is no good, you'll be leading her on and that in itself will only lead to further heartache for her. it's not right to be with someone who doesn't love you, you are wasting each other's time.Break it to her, tell her that you prefer to be upfront with her rather than leading her on,Se'll appreciate your honesty.
