If I have to re-install the OS on an older computer (Pentium 4, less than 2.0 GHz, cheap vid card), will I have more problems than it is worth? I have heard that XP Pro is much better and more stable than Home. Should I go with Pro or try to get Vista to work on my older machine? Rumor has it that Vista needs a duo-Core, over 2.0 GHz and an expensive video card. I am not a gamer, but might like the new OS anyway.

you could probably get vista to install ok, it needs a lot of memory if you want to use the premium or business versions with all the aero bells & whistles. but just using the basic version it'll be ok with 512mb of ram.

It doesn't really have a noticeable slowdown on my system compared to xp...runs about the same. with an older system you will have to do some tracking down of the drivers. might be a pain in the *** finding them for older devices. Unless you really want vista on there xp is simple to install....get it up an runnining in about 20 min

Right now you will probably have more problems than its worth. I would go with XP, at least for the time being. Vista will not work very well on an older machine, so you do need a CPU over two Ghz and a really good video card to run it well. If I were you I would wait at least six months to get vista so all the bugs can get worked out, the drivers released, and all the programs to get released.

Do not install Vista on that computer. Vista doesn't need a dual-core processor(it can utilize dual-core processors effectively, though), but it does require a good bit of computing power, a good video card, and I'd recommend 2 GB of RAM with Vista(1 GB is required). If you want Vista, you will need a new computer.

I think that you should do whatever benefit you. Although eventually windows xp will be out dated, and vista will stay around for many years to come. In the end ,you will end up spending the money. It really depends on you, and the money you Have saved. If you have extra cash, go ahead, if not wait and save it up. If you have the money, but want to save, then that is what you should do. Do whatever your heart ells you. Wishing you all the best!!
REMEMBER:
Whatever you do, it will benefit you in the end!
Good luck.

Go to http://www/microsoft.com

Search on Windows Vista

On the Vista page there is a link for "requirements" that will define what you need to run the various versions of Vista.

Hope this helps.

Stick with XP unless you really have an urge to spend money. There is currently no compelling reason to "upgrade" to Vista.
