If you got married in Dec. 2006, would you file jointly or separately?

If you were married on December 31, 2006, you are legally required to file as married; without any further details, you should file Jointly, PERIOD. "Married Filing Separate" loses a lot of deductions and credits and is almost never the better choice (it also changes your tax bracket, so your income is likely to be taxed at a higher rate).

You can use free estimator websites to see the difference; put in your income and deductions using both MFJ and MFS, and odds are good that you would get a more favorable result using MFJ. Good luck!

As long as you were married in 2006, you either file married but separate, or jointly. When I was first married, I did my taxes both ways and the jointly came out ahead. But your case could be different I guess...try it.

well sometimes people can get married and not live together untill jan as it happen with me and my husband. we got married in Novemeber but with leasing issues and advance notice warning we were not officially living togehter untill feb 1 2005. In that case you can file HOH or single
