Not for an apple, no.
But for open active rebellion against His revealed will.
Do you think you would have fared any beter than Adam and Eve did? Do not be deceived. The serpent would have got you just as easily, and probably easier.
I say that because every day you sell your soul, not for an "apple" (btw, the Bible says nothing about an apple) but for cheap, sleazy, desires that fade before you can grasp them. Cheap porno, money that rots, possessions that take all your time and energy. For things that eat your soul before you realize it's even effecting you.
Matthew 16:26
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

It's like you kick your kid around after you let him alone in the kitchen with plate full of sweets. You told him not to take one, but still he did, so he doesn't deserve anything else than to live on the streets for the rest of his life.
Btw, interesting story from the guy above me, which is true, but this mitochondrial Eve (there is also an Y-chromosome Adam or something like that) has really 100% nothing to do with the biblical Adam and Eve. They were both not the only man and woman in their time, they even lived at least 150,000 years apart from each other.
For Adam, go here and click below 60,000 in the time bar, and you'll find him in the Horn of Africa:

Heh, you Christians amuse me.
The story of Adam and Eve is basically a creation myth with no basis in fact.
However, imo it does perhaps offer a type of primitive explanation for the evolution of the human awareness of the self.
Before humans possessed an awareness of the self, they were driven by instinct just as other animals were, and there was no real appreciation of vanity or morality systems. Their actions were by and large driven only by the instinct of self-preservation.
Once humans ate of "the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil", they evolved to have consciousness of moral behavior toward other humans, and conversely vanity or self-absorption. The fruit is a metaphor for the evolution of that human consciousness.
Before humans "ate of the apple" and opened Pandora's box so to speak by evolving a consciousness of morality, the world was indeed a paradise to them for they were not cognizant of any morality other than the instinct of preserving themselves (and of course their mates/tribes, but that was also just an extension of the self-preservation instinct) and the world was basically perfect. There could be no "right" or "wrong" in the pre-self-aware human, because self-preservation was the only motivating factor for behavior and thus it was never wrong.
Once they evolved this consciousness, the flipside, i.e., vanity or self-absorption, was also considered wrong and therefore something of which to be ashamed...whereas before, all that mattered was self-preservation and the survival of your genes, so all behaviors, no matter how "vain", were essentially undertaken to increase one's survivability/procreation factor.
And that explains the part about why Adam and Eve went and hid in shame, because they were conscious of their own vanity/morality and no longer acting in the blissful ignorance of instinct alone.

The fruit that Eve ate was only the first sin that set the rest of the sins in motion. It is very obvious that Adam and Eve's sins continued on into their children because Cain murdered his brother out of jealousy which is a sin.
The fruit is really not that important. It was the first sin of disobedience that had to be recorded for us to understand the significance of it.

For one, it wasn't an apple, it was a fruit of fertility of sorts, it's symbolism, it means they had sex. And Adam made Eve eat the fruit to see what would happen. When he saw that nothing happened, he ate it too. Damn I wish ignorant bible beaters would just learn some simple ******* comprehension!

The reason God punishes you is because you are a wicked sinner. You just blasphemed and slandered Him in your question. I would venture to say that all of your thoughts about Him are mean and ignorant and that all of your actions are basically selfish and often underhanded.
You are, in a word, a wicked ungrateful rebel against the One who has blessed you with every blessing you have ever experienced in life. But if you find a lot of grief in your life, my guess is that much of this is a result of your own choices, though not all.
Repent, and believe the Gospel.

Ahh, but not just any fruit...
It was the tree that could make them "as gods, knowing good and evil".
That was the problem. When people make themselves higher than God, each deciding what is good and evil for themselves, without regard to anything beyond their own vested interests, that is where the problem comes in.
.
Kinda like liberals, you know?

The bible does not say anywhere that eve ate an apple. God commanded Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of good and evil. (talk to satan). He did say that they could eat of any tree in the Garden even the tree of life (Jesus)
