I have a friend who says she is atheist. She does not believe in any higher power. Yet she somehow believes in ghosts. How is this possible? What can she think ghosts are if she doesn't believe in an after life or anything like that?

Because you don't need a higher power to believe in ghosts. All you need is to realize that science hasn't explained everything yet. There's actually proof of ghosts, believe it or not. There's no proof of some omnipotent omniscient sky pixie that will throw everyone into heaven or hell based on how well they please him.

I don't know. Maybe she thinks there are different levels of existence of some sort.... like dimensions?

I'm really rusty on this. I read a book years ago, by Michio Kaku, on how our universe might have split off from a perfect (I think it was) 10 dimensional universe somehow. OK, the book didn't mention anything about ghosts, but, if there are other universes possible then who knows. *shrugs* I need to find that book again. It was really interesting stuff.

I don't believe in ghosts. But every person is entitled to believe the way they want to. There is no atheist rule book that we live by. If your friend wants to believe in ghosts then she has that right. Don't condemn her for her beliefs. A real friend wouldn't do that.

I'm an atheist and I don't believe in ghosts. It's not really a "spirit" though. People like that consider it an imprint, having to do with electrical and magnetic currents.

You'll have to work that out with your friend. I don't believe in ghosts, and I'm not even an atheist.

Ghosts could exists. Its not written in stone that they come from the after-life. Thats just the popular theory. It could come from other sources. Time-lapse, multi-verse ect...

Also many athiests arent as athiest as you think. They dont believe in the popularized god but something that is the originaztion of the universe. It dosnt necesarely have to be a conciuos being.

I was reluctant to stop believeing in ghosts when I first became atheist as well. I'm not really sure why. She'll most likely grow out of it.

because perhaps she understands the mechanics of ghosts and what they really are
which is nothing more than energy lingering on the area that was once frequented by a person

they are not spirit ... that is quite different

however you dont have to believe in God to believe in an after life
some atheists i know do believe in some form of after life without a deity involved

HI Im you friend LOL! I cant expalin why I believe in ghosts...but I DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD! No higher power, I am not confused, I dont use the term loosely.....some things just arent expained :)

Interesting point, since what she is suggesting is contradictry. An Atheist by definition does not believe in any life after death or superior being. As such, their view on death is simply that when we die we just cease to be. I suspect she is using the term somewhat loosely.

You are spending too much time with labels. Who cares what it's called? She believes in ghosts, but she doesn't believe in God .
