Its been 27 years for me and I'll be an alcoholic until the day I die. A binge drinker I was. If I picked it up now I'd be where I would
have been had I been drinking for the last 27 years not where I
left off. Many have proven it with their quick deaths. For one to pick it up after years is a very scary thought. Like a raging uncontrolable tide moving in with a vengeance on an older body
thats not used to it anymore. The tolerance is at an all time low.
If it is you for God's sake don't even think of it.

yes. alcoholism is a disease without a cure but...
Remission is often used to refer to a state where an alcoholic is no longer showing symptoms of alcoholism. The American Psychiatric Association considers remission to be a condition where the physical and mental symptoms of alcoholism are no longer evident, regardless of whether or not the person is still drinking. They further subdivide those in remission into early or sustained, and partial or full. Others (most notably Alcoholics Anonymous) use the term exclusively to describe those who have completely stopped consumption of alcohol.

Yes you are! alcoholism is a disease. Once you've quit for that amount of time and if you were to start drinking again you would want the alcohol again like the alcoholic you were before. I have a family full of alcoholics 25yrs later they still attend meetings.

once an alcoholic always an alcoholic. being an alcoholic is not about whether you have had a drink recently. it's about your relationship to alcohol. but ultimately we each have to decide what terms best describe us, and if you feel that you are no longer an alcoholic, and that your relationship with alcohol has changed, then call yourself something else. whatever you feel comfortable with.

Yes. That's what AA will tell you. Once an addict, always an addict and it isn't worth the risk anyway.
