Are Mosquito a big problem in southern california? Around the Los Angeles area?

Some years, yes. I grew up in LA county, and I remember as a kid when they used to spray malathion around the LA river and other places. We were told to stay indoors after dark, and you could hear the helicopters flying really low. It was scary/cool. This was in the late 70s/early 80s. I dont' think they spray anymore, but I imagine in wetter years mosquitos are still a problem. Probably are everywhere it doesn't freeze.

To answer the other woman's question, they still spray in L.A., and no, there isn't much of a mosquito problem here. Compared to other places, it's a mosquito free haven, unless you live next to a large body of water, which most Angelinos don't. Even then, it's not all that bad. Go to Florida once and you'll see what I mean. It's just way too dry out here.
