The body only has so much energy reserves to call upon, and during an illness those reserves would be dedicated to what was required for life functions and fighting the disease. The immune system is on overtime, producing white blood cells to do the defense, plus the body must do repairs on whatever damage has been done on the cellular level. That all takes a great deal of energy, as you might imagine. As part of the effort to conserve what energy and supplies are available, the body triggers fatigue. Since you don't feel like moving, you tend not to- and recovery goes faster. Although you can push things to an extent, you are just burning the proverbial candle from both ends, and eventually something has to give. If you are unlucky, the infection or disease gets the upper hand, and you get sicker. Normally, though, it just takes longer to get better. If you think of your energy reserves as sort of an electric company, you realize there is only so much electricity produced and only so much it can do. If everybody plugs in the a/c and turns the temp down to freezing, the power company can't keep up with demand. At first, the lights dim, but eventually you get a brownout. The body functions pretty much the same way. In response to disease, the body requires more energy. Only so much can be produced, and only so many demands can be met. Fatigue is just the lights dimming, and is a normal response which should really be listened to.

An infection is the body's way of telling you to slow down. Listen to your body. By expending less energy on everyday activities, your body can devote more energy to fighting an infection and getting well. People who seem to get cold after cold, never really getting well are usually ones who don't give their bodies the rest they need to completely eliminate an infection. Take it easy. Get plenty of rest. Stay home from work or school for a few days. Your boss may not be happy, but remind him that staying home will help you get back to full strength more quickly, and keep you from infecting others.

Sleep is when your body heals itself, so your system is trying to speed up that process. This is why after an operation many times hospitals won't allow visitors in to see someone until they are awake on their own. Also when you are sick so much energy is going into fighting it and the symptoms that your body can't be bothered doing anything else. When I'm sick my ADD gets worse and I can't remember basic things like how to spell or what my address is!

Because your body is using energy to fight the sickness. The more you rest, the more energy your body has to fight it.
