i am in a competition. i have ot lose 20 or more pounds by spring break.

Although I'm not recommending that you go on a specific "diet", such as the Atkins diet, or South Beach diet, if you reduce your intake of carbohydrates - especially stuff like bread, rice, potatoes, etc - you stand to lose some weight. It goes without saying that you need to cut out all junk foods and minimize, or even better eliminate your intake of refined sugars. Stick to the basics: go for vegetables, fruits, nuts and lean meats. Throw some exercise into the mix too.

It's different for everyone... I mean, different diets work for different people.

I think the best way to lose weight (and healthiest) is to simply cut back on the calories. Try eating half the food you usually do. Especially be sure to cut out any candy, chocolate, or fattening foods in your diet.

However, be sure you are still getting nutrients.

I lost 10 pounds in one month by simply cutting out any chocolate in my diet and only eating two meals a day. The first meal wasn't a *real* meal, though... it was a nutrition bar. I would eat one of those Zone Perfect bars every morning for breakfast, and then not eat again until dinner. Find a flavor you like and stick to it (personally, I LOVE the Cinnamon Roll ones... it's the only nutrition bar I've ever found that I actually LIKE. I mean... I would eat it as a treat anytime. :D) Nutrition bars provide good nutrients so that you aren't lacking in any vital nutrients your body needs, but also don't contain as many calories as usual meals. Also, they are high in protein. :)

Be sure to excercise when you can as well. That actually helps a lot.

A proper diet is the best way to lose weight naturally and keep it off. You have to eat a varied adequate and balanced diet. Your body needs all kinds of food to function properly including fat in smaller quantities though. Your body needs the nutrients and vitamins in fruits and vegetables the most, that is what you should eat the most of (at least 5 servings a day). You also need protein, and a little fat. Reduce your intake of sweets, fried food and foods that contain a lot of fat. Don't drink too many alcoholic beverages or soft drinks (they have a lot of calories). Don't go to sleep right after you eat. And finally exercise at least 3 to 4 days a week for about 45 minutes.Good luck. You can also get more information about nutrition from this site:

The best diet is not to call it a diet. I know that Special K with Strawberries, and making my meal portions smaller has worked. Also working out four to five times a week is good too.
