It doesn't really matter but I prefer to do it ahead of time. If you really want to do a great icing job you should put a crumb coat on. It just a really really thin layer. Let that sit for a few hours until it hardens a bit. This will make it so that when you do the final layer no crumbs will get into it.

If you let the final layer sit and use really good bakers icing the outside will harden a bit. It's the best way to eat cake when the outside of the frosting has a slight (very slight) harness to it.

If your using canned icing it doesn't really make a difference.

i normally place the cake in the fridge for about 15 minutes then add the frosting. but if you also place the icing on the stove after the cake has come out. i've noticed the frosting is much softer and easier to spread on the cake later.

that all depends on you as a person...you should wait til the entire cake is at room temperature...if you place this in the fridge thinking that this will cool it faster...this will only make the cake have a moisture barrier that won't allow the frosting to cling to the cake...cool out in the air...However since I don't like frosting I would leave it plain....

I frost my tarts while they're thoroughly cooled at room temp. If the field did not say to refrigerate it to chill out it, then you might desire to have left it on the counter to chill out. it is going to p.c.. up moisture from being interior the refrigerator & that may not be a solid element while frosting. you're able to now have difficulty getting it out of the pan considering which you place it interior the refrigerator. They inform you to attend 10 minutes before flipping simply by fact supplies the cake a super gamble to chill out down somewhat. solid success!
