I have a small dilemma. The center lines on my top and bottom sets of teeth do not line up. (AKA- my midline is not "perfect".) Now, in some cases, this can cause the chin to grow crooked- that hasn't happened. That's not the problem. The problem is- throughout my life, I have had a large problem with headaches. I stay hydrated, I take aspirin, I do EVERYTHING I CAN. However, today at the dentist, I have been told that this uncentered midline could be the cause of these headaches. They described the area the dental-problem-caused headaches would occur in- and it matched up with my headaches. The dentist said that to fix this problem would take a year with top AND bottom braces. This is the only thing wrong with my mouth and teeth. Otherwise I am fine. I wouldn't need to have teeth pulled or anything. I hate my headaches with a passion, but I am afraid of braces and have heard horrible horror stories. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me decide! What do you think?

Ooh, I know all about teeth-and-jaw related headaches! And believe me, proper teeth alignment can cause these horrendous, “lay-me-low” headaches. My maxillo-facial surgeon stopped blinding, paralyzing headaches in a matter of days with a little elastic band around my braces – no big deal.
Braces aren’t the pariah / geek-beak thing to make fun of anymore. Get it sorted out as soon as you can, the headache stands a good chance of going, and your smile will be prettier too!

My midline has never matched up and I've never had a headache because of it. I would get a second opinion from your regular doctor (maybe there are are headache specialists?) I know that given a rather vague symptom (like an upset stomcah or a headache) a psychiatrist will say it's in your head, a nutritionist will say its your diet, a endocriniologist will say its your thyroid, and my yoga teacher will say it's your chakras (that last one is a joke).

Braces are quite an investment and I really really thing it would be a good idea to get a second opinion, even from another dentist (If your dentist is reputable he should be glad your getting a second opinion)

As for braces horror stories . . . braces aren't that bad. They're mostly an annoyance. You have to watch out for certain foods and they'll make your gums ache (and cause a headache) the day that you get the wires adjusted. Food gets stuck in them easily and it can get annoying when it's time to floss. But if you brush after every meal you shouldn't have a problem.

If this is what you need to rid yourself of regular, blinding headaches then I would so it. (and as far as dental devices go, braces aren't bad). You will probably need to wear a retainer periodically to keep the teeth from moving back into their original position.

Hope this helps

I think someone is trying to scare you into getting braces so they can make a lot of money off you. I'd definitely be getting a second opinion.

I would suggest that you go see a neurologist with your xrays from the dentist...also I would consult with a orthodontist to get his opinion...
