My dog is very aggressive and I am going to put her down. Just wondering if this would be sedating and make her more comfortable. Seriously answers pls. This is a sensitive area for me.

My dog is a rescue dog from an abusive back ground. I have had her 5 yrs and she is 10 yrs old. I have looked into training but I was told she is beyond training. She has been on medication for aggression, including xanex. I will be putting her down this week, just wanted to make it less stressful for my dog.
Thanks for your input.

Give her Chamomile tea. It will relax her and reduce stress.
Just dump it out of the teabag, and mix with a little canned food or meat..Feed it about 30 minutes before she needs to relax..It will give her a sense of well-being, and make things easier.
I am so sorry that you have to part with your dog. Sometimes these decisions are nearly impossible..I am sure you are doing the right thing for her and your family.. a person who truely loves their pet is always the best one to make the tough decisions.

No, you can't give your dog Ambien, but you can make an appointment to see your vet, and see about getting your dog put on medication to help with the aggression. Medication won't cure aggression, but combined with professional training, it might make it more controllable.

As far as giving her Ambien to help make the euthanization more comfortable, I wouldn't do that. Ambien isn't used in dogs, and it might cause a completely different effect. You can talk with your vet and see if you could get a sedative to make the car ride and vet visit less stressful. When they euthanize your dog, first they will give her a sedative to calm her completely. This will give you some time to say goodbye. Then they will give your dog the medication that will stop her heart and kill her.

I'm really sorry you have to put your dog down. This is the hardest decision any dog lover has to make. Unfortunately, sometimes aggression cannot be fixed. Don't feel too bad, most likely there's something chemically wrong with your dog's brain, and the most loving and tender owner would have been unable to fix it, either.

Important information

Ambien may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy the morning after taking this medicine, especially if you take the extended-release tablet, or if you are a woman. Wait at least 4 hours or until you are fully awake before you do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Zolpidem cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking this medicine and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Do not share this medication with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have. The recommended doses of zolpidem are not the same in men and women, and this drug is not approved for use in children. Misuse of this medication can result in dangerous side effects.
Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, walking, making phone calls, or having sex and later having no memory of the activity. If this happens to you, stop taking Ambien and talk with your doctor about another treatment for your sleep disorder.
Do not take this medicine if you have consumed alcohol during the day or just before bed.
Zolpidem may be habit forming. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.

I'm so sorry you're going through this challenging decision. I work with aggressive dogs and I know that it can be a difficult situation for families. It can be the most responsible decision in some cases, though.

The process of euthanasia done by a veterinarian is really quite easy on the dog- it does involve a needle, but it doesn't take long and they simply fall asleep. (I've been present during the process, and the animals simply relax and within a few seconds it is over.)

Discuss with your vet what your options are, and he or she will provide you with the best way to make it as easy as possible for your dog. Because your dog has aggression issues the vet may prefer to sedate her first anyway for his or her protection, so she may be asleep even before the shot is given.

In my view, if she is not aggressive toward you, she would benefit from having you near as she goes to sleep. However, if you are not comfortable doing that or if she is aggressive toward you, the sedative and shot will make it very easy for her.

If your vet is not sympathetic, call a few different ones. There are vets that will help you make this as easy as possible.

It is generally not the best idea to take her to animal control to have her put down. Some of them use old methods that are quite unpleasant for the animal. If you choose to do that, be sure they use a lethal injection rather than a chamber method.

My heart goes out to you.

Please don't give you dog a medication meant for humans. Talk to your vet first. It may be ok in a low dose. It sounds like you are trying to make this less stressful for your dog, so if your vet says Ambien is not appropriate then I'm sure they can give you one dose of a pet medicine that will have the sedating effect. I would be worried that your dog could have a bad reaction to the Ambien, so please ask the experts.

How sad for you - talk to your vet about a sedative. Ambien is for humans and might have the opposite effect on a dog. Good luck

Vet's are like medical doctors for animals; if your baby were to get into your medicine, you'd send it to the emergency room. Similarly, since your dog got into your medicine cabinet, it should be sent to the vet, no?

Seems like you already have gotten your answer. I just wanted you to know that my thoughts are with you. Sounds like you have tried everything possible in correcting the situation and you should feel good about that. This is a hard thing to do and it never gets easier. I wish you the best.

Good lord! Are you out of your mind?

You don't give a dog drugs, you let the vet do that. Have you consulted a behavorist? A trainer?

I'm not trying to 2nd guess you, but sometimes what some people think is aggression is controllable with training. Please consult with a good trainer or behaviorist before euthanizing your dog.

You can search the internet and look for dog trainers in your area for help. Look for someone with experience with aggression. There's lots of help out there.

Some rescues may even take the dog. Consult petfinder.com for the rescues in your area first - please?

And please don't give your dog drugs. Talk to your vet. He or she can help you.

Good luck!
